Over the past few days, I have been thinking of the recent changes to TNA's iMPACT! Wrestling and how they could possibly help the company that ends up always being the red-headed stepchild of the wrestling world, including the IWC. But alot of the problems in TNA have been with the booking team. At first it was the Russo factor, and now alot are upset with Pritchard's style of booking, which to me is better pacing than what Russo was doing. But now we are presented with something that could beath fresh life into a promotion that is consider by meaning to be stall and just a lite version of WCW in 2000.
This new change involves a once-a-month event entitled Open Fight Night. The concept seemed interesting enough with the idea of wrestlers being able to challenge whoever they wanted, including champions, and the challenge had to be answered. But the thing that has been kind of mocked or shrugged off is the concept of non-contracted wrestlers performing in a match with three judges and Hogan, in the style of most competition reality shows. Many comparisons to American Idol and The Voice were made, but no one has thought about the brighter side of this. The fact that TNA will be bringing in fresh faces to compete for a chance to make it onto the roster could be one of the most innovative and creative ideas to come to wrestling in quite awhile.
Let's look at one of two ways that this can possibly work out. Let's look at this from a creative standpoint. An up-and-coming young talent comes in and puts on a great display of talent in the ring with a lower mid-carder. With Hogan being impressed by the kid, he gets singled out by the group of heels that are alligning themselves right now against Hogan, let's say Bully Ray and Gunner with Ric Flair for this one. With this, you could instantly gain the young talent a decent introduction as the young, plucky rookie taking on veterans like Bully Ray and a man with a decent uphill push with Gunner. You could have swerve at some point with the new talent turning on Hogan and his mentoring by joining forces with Flair and his cronnies. You could do so much with this that the stories can write themselves here.
The second way this could work is more of a grassroots type of thing. With the advent of Twitter and social media in the wrestling world, fans have a louder voice than before. There is no better example of this than Zach Ryder. Using Youtube and Twitter, he made it possible for a push to the United States Championship and a decent fued with Dolph Ziggler. Another good example of this is the fans reaction to Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan. The "YES YES YES" chants have became louder and have even infected ROH crowds in the past couple months. Now how does this lend itself to the Open Fight Night concept, you may ask? Well, imagine getting together with other Juggalos and Lettes to get JCW talent like the Ring Rydas or 2 Tuff Tony on TV for a chance at a TNA contract? Or if you are as smarky as me, imagine if Johnny Gargano or Chuck Taylor were given this chance by the voice of the fans. This is what I am hoping to see, since TNA is trying to push the wrestling matters and the fans matter message.
In closing, these are just two possible outcomes of the Open Fight Night contract competition concept, and they are also my own opinions. And yes, I know, the name is Angry Smark Ninja, and this wasn't all too angry, but this concept has me hoping for the best for once. But as always, only time and execution can tell. But for now, MMFCL to all the fam and stay tuned for more from your friendly neighborhood angry smark ninja.
